Philip L. McDaniel, M.D.
Congratulations Dr. McDaniel on your recent retirement. Thank you for all you have given of yourself to everyone including here at South Tabor Family Physicians.
Dr. McDaniel graduated from University of Illinois College of Medicine and went on to complete an internal medicine residency at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. To further prepare for overseas work, he did a one year preceptorship in general surgery and orthopedic surgery with additional training in dental extractions and OB/GYN. This all led up to him becoming a third generation missionary doctor in Thailand.
On his first furlough Dr. McDaniel received his master’s degree in public health and tropical medicine at Tulane University. He served the people of Thailand for twenty-three years at the Kwai River Christian Hospital through his care of patients with malaria, TB, dysentery, and obstetrical complications. While there he also performed general surgeries and frequent tooth extractions. Dr. McDaniel took care of gunshot wounds and landmine injuries that came from the Myanmar side of the border as well. In addition to these medical and surgical responsibilities, Dr. McDaniel oversaw the public health program along with the water and electrical systems. (Back-up generator power was required frequently.) He tries to return for a working visit about once a year.
Because of his work in Thailand, Dr. McDaniel has a special interest in malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, intestinal parasites, and dermatology. He joined the team at South Tabor Family Physicians in May of 2003. His outside interests include photography, travel, reading, and spending time with his family. He also enjoys an assortment of musical genres including classical, polka, and alpine yodeling.
