March is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month

This is a time to learn more about this often misunderstood condition and how we can support those living with it.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. It can impact a person’s ability to move, feel, and think clearly. MS looks different for everyone—some people may have only mild symptoms, while others face greater challenges.

At South Tabor Family Physicians, we are proud to support our patients living with MS and other chronic conditions. We provide comprehensive, compassionate care for families in Portland, Oregon and surrounding areas, and we’re here to help at every stage of life.

In this post, we’ll cover the basics of MS, how it’s diagnosed and managed, and what you can do to support your health—or someone else’s—if MS is part of your journey.

What Is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

MS is a condition where the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves, called myelin. This causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.

Symptoms can vary widely. They might include:

  • Trouble walking or staying balanced
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue that doesn’t go away with rest
  • Blurry vision or double vision
  • Problems with memory or concentration

MS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, but it can occur at any age. Women are more likely than men to develop the condition.  There is no cure yet, but early diagnosis and treatment can help people live full and active lives.

How You Can Support MS Awareness Month

MS Awareness Month is about learning, helping, and showing support. Here’s how you can make a difference:

How Is MS Diagnosed?

MS can be hard to diagnose because symptoms may come and go or look like other health issues. Doctors may use:

  • Physical exams
  • Neurological tests
  • MRI scans to look at the brain and spinal cord
  • Blood tests to rule out other conditions

If you’ve noticed unusual numbness, weakness, or vision problems, don’t ignore them. At South Tabor Family Physicians, we offer primary care and referrals to specialists if further evaluation is needed.

Living Well with MS: How to Manage Your Health

MS affects each person differently, but there are many ways to take control of your health and feel your best.

  1. Keep Up with Regular Doctor Visits

Even if your symptoms are mild, regular check-ups are important. Your doctor can:

  • Monitor symptoms
  • Track how your treatments are working
  • Adjust medications if needed
  • Offer support for mental health and fatigue

We provide chronic disease management at South Tabor Family Physicians, including support for patients living with MS and related conditions.

  1. Eat Well and Stay Active

A healthy lifestyle helps your body stay strong and fight fatigue.

  • Eat balanced meals with lots of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein
  • Stretch and move regularly—yoga and walking are great low-impact options
  • Stay hydrated and get enough rest

Your care team can help you create a plan that works for your energy levels.

  1. Get Help Managing Stress

Stress can make MS symptoms worse. Take time each day to rest and reset.

  • Try deep breathing, meditation, or even short walks
  • Talk to someone if you’re feeling overwhelmed
  • Get support from family, friends, or a counselor

We know that emotional health matters just as much as physical health. Our team is here to help you care for both.

  1. Be Prepared for Flare-Ups

Some people with MS experience flare-ups where symptoms suddenly get worse.

  • Know your signs
  • Have a plan for how to rest and recover
  • Keep in touch with your doctor if symptoms change
