Smart Tips for a Healthy Halloween
By |Published On: October 31, 2025|

Halloween is all about costumes, creativity, and candy — but it doesn’t have to come with a sugar crash!

With a little planning and a few healthy habits, you can help your kids (and yourself) enjoy the fun while keeping energy levels steady and smiles bright.

At South Tabor Family Physicians (STFP), we know balance is key — and a little moderation can make Halloween just as exciting without the post-trick-or-treat slump.

  1. Eat Before You Trick-or-Treat

Before heading out, serve a balanced dinner with protein and fiber (like chicken and veggies or a turkey sandwich with fruit). A full stomach means kids are less likely to overindulge on sweets later.

  1. Candy Strategy: Pick Favorites and Donate the Rest

Let kids choose their favorite 5–10 pieces to keep and consider donating the rest to a local charity or community candy exchange. This teaches moderation while spreading some joy to others.

  1. Walk, Don’t Drive

Trick-or-treating is a great chance to get steps in together! Walking between houses helps burn energy and keeps everyone warm on chilly Portland nights. Bring flashlights and stay visible to drivers.

  1. Hydrate and Brush

Remind kids to drink water throughout the evening — sugar and sticky candies can cling to teeth, so rinsing (and brushing afterward) helps prevent cavities.

  1. Keep It Fun, Not Frightening

Encourage safety by using reflective tape on costumes, checking treats before eating, and sticking to well-lit neighborhoods. Safety first means more sweet memories (and fewer scares).
