Stress Affects Everyone

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time to talk about something we all experience. Whether it’s work, school, family, the economy or your health, stress can show up in many ways. While some stress is normal, too much can hurt your body and your mind.

At South Tabor Family Physicians, we want you to know that you’re not alone—and that help is available. Our team of Health Care Providers has been serving families in the Portland area for over 60 years, and we’re here to support your health in every season of life.

What Is Stress?

Stress is how your body reacts to a challenge or demand. Sometimes stress helps you stay focused or get things done. But when stress sticks around for too long, it can lead to health problems.

Common Signs of Stress

You might be stressed and not even realize it. Here are some signs to watch for:

  • Headaches or trouble sleeping
  • Upset stomach or changes in appetite
  • Feeling worried, sad, or angry
  • Tight muscles or body aches
  • Racing thoughts or trouble focusing
  • Feeling tired all the time

If any of this sounds familiar, it may be time to take a closer look at how stress is affecting your health.

How Stress Affects Your Body

Stress doesn’t just make you feel anxious. It can also affect your body in real ways:

  • Raises your blood pressure
  • Weakens your immune system
  • Makes it harder to manage chronic conditions like diabetes or asthma
  • Causes weight gain or loss
  • Triggers stomach problems or headaches
  • Increases your risk of heart disease

Managing stress is just as important as getting regular checkups or taking your medicine.

Ways to Manage Stress Every Day

The good news is there are simple things you can do every day to feel better and lower your stress levels.

  1. Get Moving

Exercise helps your body release feel-good chemicals. You don’t need a gym—walking, dancing, or stretching at home works too. Check out our recent post about some great healthy ideas for Spring and your health here.

  1. Take Deep Breaths

Even a few minutes of deep breathing can calm your mind. Try breathing in through your nose for 4 seconds and out through your mouth for 6 seconds.

  1. Stick to a Routine

Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps your body feel more balanced.

  1. Talk to Someone

Don’t hold it all in. Talking to a friend, loved one, or Health Care Provider can really help.

  1. Take Breaks

It’s okay to take short breaks during the day. Step outside, listen to music, or close your eyes for a few minutes.

  1. Eat Healthy Foods

A balanced diet helps your body and your brain feel better.

  1. Limit Screen Time

Too much news or social media can add to stress. Set a timer or take breaks from your screens. For more helpful tips on managing stress, visit the American Psychological Association’s Stress Management Guide.

When to Get Help

If you’ve tried managing stress and it’s not getting better, it’s time to talk to your Health Care Provider. You should also reach out if you:

  • Feel sad, angry, or anxious most days
  • Can’t sleep or eat normally
  • Have panic attacks or feel overwhelmed
  • Don’t enjoy things you used to
  • Are turning to alcohol or other substances to cope

We’re here to help. At South Tabor Family Physicians, we offer compassionate, whole-person care, and we can help you create a plan to feel better. You can also learn more about stress and mental health at the National Institute of Mental Health’s website.
